1.What is Nubit?
1.1. What is Nubit?
Nubit is the first scalable Data Availability Layer project built on the Bitcoin platform, dedicated to the Bitcoin community.
With security based on Bitcoin, Nubit enhances Bitcoin's data storage capabilities without compromising integrity. This facilitates applications such as Ordinals Layer 2 solutions, price oracles, and indexers, thereby expanding the scope and improving the performance of the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Nubit leverages the innovative consensus algorithm and the Lightning Network to ensure Bitcoin's complete censorship resistance.
As a result, Nubit not only enhances scalability but also maintains the core attributes of Bitcoin, including security and decentralization.
1.2. What is data availability layer?
In blockchain, data availability ensure that data uploaded by users is verified and stored by certain nodes within the network.
To achieve consensus on data availability, the simplest method, as seen in early blockchain systems like Bitcoin, requires all network participants to download the entire block of data and verify its validity. However, this leads to scalability issues: if the blockchain stores a sufficiently large amount of data, regular users may be unable to handle or unwilling to spend bandwidth on data they are not interested in. As a result, they may refrain from participating in verification, leading to centralization in the network.
To address this challenge, LazyLedger proposed a new technique using random sampling to verify data availability, called Data Availability Sampling (DAS). This technique allows network participants to ensure the integrity of the entire block of data without requiring anyone to download it in full.
In this method, the block proposer can encode the block's contents into a commitment 𝜎 and a complete encoded block 𝜋. The commitment 𝜎 is added to the block header and allows light nodes, operated by regular network members, to verify the block 𝜋's availability by randomly requesting a few positions within 𝜋. If a sufficient number of light nodes successfully check 𝜋, DAS ensures that the data is fully available.
It is noteworthy that a single light node cannot be certain of the complete data availability since it queries only a small portion of the encoded data. Therefore, DAS still requires a sufficiently large group of light nodes to participate.
2. Elements of Nubit
Nubit consists of three essential components as follows:
- Validators :
- These nodes operate using the consensus algorithm based on NubitBFT and are tasked with proposing blocks, verifying the integrity of blocks and transactions. Nubit introduces a new consensus mechanism designed to support an extremely large set of validators (potentially up to 200,000 individuals) to facilitate smooth consensus within the chain.
- Full Storage Node :
- After receiving block data from validators, these nodes are entrusted with the reliable storage of all data. Data integrity and storage capability are crucial, especially in the current landscape of data falsification risks. To mitigate these risks, Data Availability Sampling (DAS) requests from light clients are used to verify data storage capabilities and ensure system sustainability.
- Light clients :
- Upon receiving the block header issued by validators, which includes data commitments, they can initiate random requests to full storage nodes to verify data availability.
3. Tokenomics
Nubit has not yet published information about the token. Theblock101 will update more as soon as there is more information from the project.
4. Team
Nubit was founded by computer science professor Yu Feng from UCSB. Additionally, information about other project members has not yet been publicly disclosed.
5. Investors
In March 2024, Nubit successfully raised $3 million in a Pre-Seed round from dao5, OKX Ventures, Primitive Ventures...
Recently, the project secured an additional $8 million led by Polychain Capital, with participation from Nomad Capital, Spartan Group, L2IV, Big Brain Holdings, GCR, Protagonist, Gate Ventures, Animoca, Mask Network, and other investment funds.
These two investment rounds have brought Nubit's total funding to $12 million, advancing its mission to develop a secure and scalable Data Availability layer for multi-chain ecosystems, supporting AI, SocialFi, and GameFi applications.
6. Roadmap and achievements
Beyond the Bitcoin ecosystem, Nubit has recently expanded its support to all major Layer 2 frameworks, including Polygon CDK, OP Stack, Arbitrum Orbit, and Scroll, providing widely applicable data availability solutions.
In April 2024, Nubit launched its Pre-Alpha Testnet, attracting 155,115 users, deploying 5,294 module services, and processing 561,862 transactions.
The project team is set to unveil the Alpha Testnet this June, marking the final stage before the mainnet launch later this year.
As Nubit expands, the project's strategy will focus on activities such as broadening scalability, concentrating on unlocking new capabilities for AI/ML and on-chain gaming across multi-chain ecosystems.
7. Guide to joining Alpha Testnet
Nubit Alpha Testnet has been integrated with the Keplr wallet. You can participate in testing this version by following these steps:
Add the Nubit Alpha Testnet chain
Visit the link https://chains.keplr.app and search for "Nubit Alpha Testnet", then add it to your Keplr wallet
Create a wallet with a Nubit address
Open the Keplr wallet extension, click on the user avatar at the top right corner, and select 'Add Wallet' on the wallet selection page.
On the new page, select "Create new wallet".
Then follow these steps to log in and set a custom name for your wallet. Moving to the third step, you'll need to select a chain for your wallet. Search for "Nubit Alpha Testnet" and click on the checkbox to confirm.
Now you can see your Nubit address in the Keplr wallet.
To receive testnet NUB, please follow the steps below:
In the Nubit DA Alpha Testnet, users can obtain NUB tokens through two methods: Discord channels and a web faucet. Each method has its own limits and conditions.
Web Faucet: Each address can receive 0.01 NUB daily, with each device eligible for claiming once every 24 hours.
The web faucet is available at the following link: https://faucet.nubit.org
Discord: Each Discord address/ID can receive 0.03 NUB daily, and each address can claim once every 24 hours.
Join the Nubit Discord using this invite: https://discord.com/invite/nubit
To claim tokens, use the following command in the #alpha-testnet-faucet channel on Nubit's Discord:
$request
The address starts with "nubit":
Additionally, you can use the command `$balance` to check the balance of a specific address and `$transaction` to check the status of a specific transaction (only applicable for faucet transactions).
8. Conclusion
Here's the article about Nubit - the first scalable data availability layer built on Bitcoin and a guide to joining the Alpha Testnet. The project has not yet launched its token, so you can participate in the Testnet experience for a chance to receive future airdrops.
